You often hear it said that, for right-handed golfers, the key is strengthening and developing the left side of the body. This is a concept you can identify very easily in Ben Hogan's swing. Through the ball, the left side absorbs the 'hit' while the left arm can be seen to fold away beautifully, making way for the vital crossover as the right hand and forearm rotate over the left. With the correct exercises, you can train your left elbow to work closely with the body rather than acting like a chicken wing, and this gets the clubhead to release, maximising clubhead speed. Hold the club one-handed in your left hand, with your right hand supporting the left arm just above the elbow. As you swing the club keep the left upper arm close to the body (supported there by your right hand), allowing the left elbow to fold as you turn your upper body towards the target during follow through. Remember, for a natural release through the ball, the left elbow must be allowed to soften, fold and give way as the right hand and arm continue to swing across the chest to arrive at a balanced finish, shoulders down and relaxed, the elbows comfortably together.
You can get personal coaching from David Blair to improve your left arm release at a David Blair Golf School, or you can check out David's DVD (see link below).
